What to Watch - Army of the Dead
by Dani Rogue, GGR alum
Overall Grade: B+
First up, I don’t love horror or zombie flicks. This grade is a higher one than I would ordinarily give considering. It has all of the satisfying bits I went into it hoping for based on the premise.
As shown in trailers, it’s a heist for a massive safe in zombie-infested Las Vegas. There’s good action, beautifully shot gun battles and “last stands.” There are homages to Vegas culture and Planet of the Apes. There’s dark humor to break up the bleak bits that inevitably happen in a zombie movie.
Tig Notaro is every bit as glorious as we’d hoped she would be and though you know she’s technically alone in the scenes it doesn’t ever feel like it. There are still somehow a couple of surprises though I didn’t think it was possible for either genre.
The biggest drawback is that the sound engineering is unpleasant. It’s probably a consequence of home release. The dialogue is looow for some of the emotional parts and the bangs and screams are very loud. We had to fluctuate the volume often which breaks the illusion. Overall pretty solid showing.
