Favorite Sports Moments Part 2
GGR is a website for everyone. A few weeks ago, I did my favorite sports moments. Now, it's time for yours. Through the magic of Facebook, I asked our readers their favorite moments and here are the results.
The first comes from my cousin, Donnie Lunsford who, as he proclaims, "bleeds Bronco blue and orange. I got married in those colors!" I can appreciate that, I know how it feels only my blood is either burgundy and gold or red and blue for the Capitals, but my blood is already red or blue so that's not very symbolic of my fandom...ANYWAYS, here is Donnie's favorite moment.
Super Bowl XXXII: Green Bay Packers vs Denver Broncos
Let's set the stage for those who are uninformed: There was a time when the Super Bowl was often a blowout. The NFC dominated and had won 13 years in a row, and 15 of 16. A lot of them were quite lopsided. Unfortunately, the Denver Broncos were on the receiving end of 3 of trips to the woodshed.
I'm sure this one against Washington stung, and the 55-17 loss to the 49ers 2 years later couldn't have been any better. It was rough being a Denver fan.
Those 80's and early 90's teams were lead by Dan Reeves, who eventually got run out of town. After a brieft experiment with Wade Phillips as coach, the Broncos brought in an offensive guru named Mike Shanahan, who learned his prowess from the great Bill Walsh in San Francisco. It took him 2 years at the helm and he had the Broncos back in the Super Bowl. They were facing off against the defending champs, the Green Bay Packers. It was a back and forth contest into the 3rd quarter. The game was tied and the Broncos were driving. I'll let Donnie take over:
End of third quarter in Super Bowl XXXII, Elway's 3rd and 8 run with the helicopter spin after he got hit, then he stood up and signaled first down with great ferocity. I said out loud, "Holy sh**! We're gonna win this thing!" Beautiful moment for a life-long Broncos fan.
The game was far from over, and the Broncos did end up winning after another Terrell Davis touchdown and a defensive stand, but this moment defined the game, showing that Elway would do whatever it took to get a Super Bowl win. It vindicated Elway's career. They would win another Super Bowl the following year to show everyone it was no fluke. For a quarterback who had been thought off as "not being able to win the Big One," he was able to change that narrative. After that second Super Bowl win, he announced his retirement. He was able to ride off into the sunset like the gunslinger he was, with two Lombardi Trophies hanging from his holsters and a Super Bowl MVP trophy on his back.
There will be more from our fans and contributors, but I wanted to start with Donnie's. Maybe it's a family bias. I'm a grown man, it's my website and I'll do what I want.
All kidding aside, this may be my site, but it's for all of us. What are your favorite sports moments? I'll share them on GGR and put cool pics and captions for yours, too!
Mike Lunsford is the Editor-In-Chief of GGR: the Great Geek Refuge. He is a huge DC sports fan and right now, because the Nats imploded and the football team is basically the cover of a supermarket tabloid waiting to happen, he is anxiously awaiting hockey season. Go Caps!
Mike gives a history lesson on the tragedy of the Baltimore Colts and the details of their relocation
